Hello all, I am thinking of upgrading our network clients from Win 98 machines to either 2000 pro or workstation, what do you recommend? and is there any benefits with speed or is 2000 more demanding than Win 98?
Thanks in advance

Win2000 Pro is more demanding than Win98 in terms of hardware requirements, a high spec Win98 machine will handle win2k, but a low spec win98 machine wouldn't install Win2k properly.

Are there any speed benefits? Not that I'm aware of.

I'd actually clarify. There is no operating system called purely "Workstation", nor is there a "Windows 2000 Workstation" operating system. There is a Windows NT 4 Workstation, but this is very old, and I wouldn't recommend putting it on new kit, because of driver support for newer hardware (for example: no plug and play or usb).
In fact, the Windows 2000 family of operating systems are no longer being developed or maintained by Microsoft, so if your equipment (and budget) can take it, I'd go for Windows XP Professional as it will have a longer lifespan.

Thanks John
I think I will stick to good old faithfull stable Win 98.

In the 2000 family is windows 2000 pro and windows 2000 server.
compared to win98 windows 2000 when using NTFS is more stable of a operating system.
As far as WIN XP and windows 2000 they are almost the same.
Like twins but dressed different.
Thats why they have Ford Crown victoria and Mercury Grand marquis they have the same drive train but dressed a little differnt.

Thats something you have to make up your mind.
If did choose win2000 you wouldnt be sorry.

I'd skip both and go with XP Pro. Why "upgrade" to a five year old OS?

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

I would diffently upgrade from Win 98. Weather it be Win 2000 or Win XP Home or Pro. Although XP is prefered. Win 98 has no Has no security what so ever, even on a password protected 98 machine I can gain access by hittting cancel on the log on screen. XP is also more reliable and more stable than 98. If you get the upgrade to Home it is about $100 per copy if you get the upgrade to pro it is about 180 per copy. You may even b able to call microsoft for better liscensing pricing

I had Windows 98 and upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro and found it to be great improvement. I then upgraded to Windows XP Home and it is even more user friendly and, I think, more stable then Win 2000
