I just installed windows 98 on my Toshiba Satellite 2805 laptop and it has failed to recognize most of my crucial drivers. The moniter has been reduced to 16 color or less, the screen now only covers 1/3 of the moniter, the modem is not found, the comm ports are not found, and the dvd drive is unfound. What can I do? Would upgrading to XP likely solve my problem? I do not have the original software that came with the computer. The computer was originally running Win 00, or Millineum (not sure which). Anyone who has experience, or who has an idea of what to do would be great to hear from. Thanks.

Most places you can put in the serial number of the pc and it will show the specs and a list of drivers to download. You just need to go to this site and put in which 2805 you have.

You can download the necessary drivers for win98 here. You may have to go to another pc to dowload the drivers and then install on the laptop.

Toshiba laptops have bios settings which are configured under Windows Control Panel. I just had a machine returned from the distributors with a replacement hard disk. I could not get the bootable Toshiba System Restore CD to install.
I had to first load Windows98 from a floppy bootdisk using CD-ROM support, and set up Windows98 from a vanilla New Install CD, load the Toshiba Setup files manually to change the bios boot-up device options so that the CD-ROM was recognised, and only then could I run the System Restore disk to install and set the graphics drivers, modem, network &c. That took the best part of the day.
I suggest you get hold of the system restore disk or a copy of it from another Satellite owner. Only then, when you have a working system, would I suggest you upgrade to XP.
