I need help with WIN 98. I have a compaq Presario 1274 laptop. The computer will boot and go to the win98 start up screen then, a black screen screen appears with:

while intializing device: VKD

Windows protection error

restart windows

But, restarting does not help. What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks.

Some history might be useful - eg, when did this appear, and did you add/remove harware/software, have a crash, virus attack etc shortly before this?

PS. Can you get into Safe Mode (tap F8 or Ctrl Key from just before windows starts)? If so, you might try one of the other options on that menu - step-by-step (it could show you where the error is occurring).

do as wolluf asks;
VKD is Keyboard related and "may" have to do with System.ini - BUT there could be an easy fix if you post history info.

I am not sure of the history behind this problem. This laptop is primarily used for remote programming of telephone systems. What I think is happening is the techs are not shutting down windows properly. All I really know is one of the techs gave it to me and said it is not working. I tried starting in safe mode but I get the same error.

Did you try step-by-step?

Can you boot to a dos prompt (same menu) - if so, you could try running scanreg /restore to restore an earlier version of the registry. Then see if that's any better.

If you can't, you could boot from a 98 boot floppy (if you have floppy drive connected) and then run scanreg.

If the same problem happens in Safe mode, then it may be caused by bad hardware, i.e., RAM, MB, video card, etc.

Did you or Do you have a USB Keyboard hooked in ? - or ANY usb devices for that matter? Disconnect all peripherals when T-shooting, including spkrs, printers, usb devices etc
