I am trying to add a 98 laptop to my wireless network. I have internet on the laptop, so I know it's talking to the router, but I can't get the network settings right to share files. When I go into Network neighborhood, all I have is "entire network" I can't see any of the computers. I've gone all thru the troubleshooter, and I just can't get the network to recognize this computer.

Is the laptop in the same workgroup as the rest of the network?

Can you ping the laptop from other computers? Can you ping the other computers from the laptop?

Sometimes, computers can see each other, but it takes quite awhile for the Network browser to refresh itself.

A method to try if it is in the correct workgroup is to go to Network properties and add the NetBEUI protocol to all the computers that you want to see the laptop (and to the laptop).

This usually helps the computers see each other.

Once they see each other, remove the NetBEUI protocol.

Definitely want to start with checking the workgroup name and whether or not you can ping the other PC's IP addresses (as AckNack has pointed out).

along the lines of Acknacks and cdoggs posts - you need to install (Control Panel >>Network) ADD > Client >Client for MS Networks

I am having exactly the same problem with a customers Win98 machine - I've been in this business for years, and normally, it's bad ram or something similar - But, I'm not sure what this problem - it's pissing me off!! The machine restarts continuosly in the morning, and at about midday the machine is fine - it's running win98, office 97, mcafee AV, and a specialist accounts package.

The only thing I haven't tried is replacing the psu - however, why is the machine fine in the afternoon and not in the morning, sounded like a virus to me, but all seems fine!?!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

No offense but I'm not sure how a hardware-related problem is "exactly like" a networking issue. Please start a new thread...
