Win 98 locks up - short of re-install, what's left?

1. Have strong antivirus programs, defrag, scandisk, Norton Utilities from CD ran Windows 98 fixes, spyware with Ad-aware, Spybot, Spy Doctor, all needed 98 updates,

2. Ran Registry fixer, defrag also.

3. Problem is very often "Out of Memory" errors when I added 128 MB Ram to existing 128 MB RAM = 256 MB.

4. We anticipate a change of PC's for users to Win XP which will eliminate the problem altogether. But we are stuck with this for a week or so.

5. We have to reboot the PC's 3-4 times per day.

6. Primary app's include WordPerfect 8, Internet Explorer, Abacus Law - a legal scheduling software.

7. Network is a peer to peer, 4 users. The two Win XP users have no problems.

Any ideas? Thank you very much, Dave

8. Have also minimized all non-essential msconfig startup items.

9. Going to Corel 8 for any newest updates.

What is the % in "system resources free" in System Information after a cold boot or a reboot?

If multiple applications are run simultaneously, then what is the above % when they are running?

So...you think maybe you got a RAM problem?
This was or was not happening before the RAM upgrade?
i.e. pull out the 128 stick that you added and see if the problems persist.

(By the way...AbacusLaw? You're the first person I've run into in these fora that was running it.)

Tired of waiting for an answer? Try asking better questions. See: faq222-2244

10. I think I found the problem & fix - used boot to F8 options, command prompt then performed:
scandisk /all /autofix /surface

This resulted in fixes to free space on one PC and lost clusters on another PC. Both PC's are now exibiting outstanding behaviour - very fast responses.

I will follow your suggestions as well - carr & ski. Thank you both.

Dave

hi i think i might have a similar problem and i want to try this fix. When you said "used boot to F8 options, command prompt then performed: scandisk /all /autofix /surface"

what do you mean by 'boot to f8 options'?
And at the command prompt are those individual commands or long command line?

sorry if this is a stupid question but would like to try this.
Simon.

Simon

Pressing F8 or Ctrl key when 98 starts to boot gives you a menu which includes safe mode and boot to a dos/command prompt.

So take command prompt option and then type the whole command and hit enter (its one command with several parameters) to execute it.

Some computers have a different way to get to this option - check Google for your brand of computer, "boot to safe mode" options.

What is happening now? Dave
