Win 98 lock up

I just re-installed my win 98. It lets me go through product registration, date/time and printer setup, then it goes to configuring system and locks up there. I can get into safe mode and scaned the HD, it found a boot error and fixed it. I still have the same problem though. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

This is not my strongest area. But if you can boot to Safe Mode, you are very possibly having a Hardware Install or Configuration problem.
Boot to safe Mode. Go to Device manager. Have a look for possible conflicts.


Many people install with minimal Hardware physically connected. Then add one device at a time after Windows is installed. Sometimes that resolves problems.

I would definitely not have the printer hooked up during an install. I forgot to add that.

Hmm, cant seem to find if its a FE or SE, it just says win98 and a date.
I went to device manager and saw nothing out of the norm, its supposed to have a yellow exclamation mark if there is something wrong, right?
I removed the printer,network card and modem to eliminate some possibilities, didnt work though.

To see what version of windows you ohave, look at Display Propertis. On that first page look at the System section. What does it say?


Unfortunately that article may not be of much help. You might want to start again.
Exactly where are you in the process now?

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Setup may stop responding (hang) during the Plug and Play hardware detection process. When you restart your computer, Setup may hang at the same point.



CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the System.ini file contains the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line.



RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, disable the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line in the System.ini file. To do so, follow these steps:



Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. For more information about Windows 98 startup, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: No "Starting Windows 98" Message at Startup


Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.


On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility.


On the Sytem.ini tab, double-click [Boot].


Click the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" check box to clear it, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.


After Setup is completed, repeat steps 2-5, clicking the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" check box to select it in step 5.


Verify that Normal Startup is selected on the General tab in System Configuration Utility.


Restart the computer when prompted.





MORE INFORMATION
Some video adapters, such as Creative Labs PCI 3D video adapters, may replace the "Display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv" line with the "Display.drv=pnp.drv" line. This can prevent Plug and Play hardware detection from working properly.

Thanks for the replies. Mosaic1, I tried what you said to do. The closest thing I could find was "Display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv". I checked it anyway. It actually brought me a small step further in the right direction. After "configuring system-updating system settings" (where it normally locked up), it went to updating personal settings and then immediately locked up there. Any more suggestions?? Thanks!

When it gets to updating Personal settings hit CTRL + ALT +DEL and end task. I remember a while back at another Forum someone else had this same problem and it resolved it. They said they had to end task a couple of times but finally they were able to install Win98. You must be exhausted. Good Luck. I hope it helps.
