Ive installed Win 98 on an NT box. Now I am running Win 98, i've lost my true color video, five gigs of hard drive, left with a dumbed down version of 98. Also NT passwords are still evident. I have tried to delete all logistical and extended partitions from DOS. I've fdisked and reinstalled but does very little. i dont have a copy of NT only win 98. I dont know what I should do in this case. Ive heard it has to do with Fat16 or something like that. Can someone out there help me out. Thanks...

Time to run through Fdisk again. Remove all partitions, and restart, fdisk again to recreate partitions, and make sure you select YES to "enable large disk support".
This will allow a format in FAT32, and will remove all traces of NT and FAT 16.
The 98 startup disk is good for this, or get a really good one at free. Cheers,

well ive seem to have gotten my extra five gigs back. but i cant define my video & ethernet drivers. windows remains in 16bit mode with a dial-up modem only available. what should i do now. my attempts to use a driver downloaded from dell.com have failed. results in "restrictions prohibit the running of this file". what are my options.. any help would be appreciated.

My guess is that there is something you aren't telling us.
Your first post notes that you are trying to install Win98 on an "NT box". You have fdisked and reinstalled Win98 (I assume it was '98, since you don't have a copy of NT).

You can't install a downloaded driver because "restrictions prohibit" it. What are you actually trying to do here? Install and run Win98 in an NT window? I don't think that will work.

Perhaps I misread the previous posts. What OS is currently installed on your computer?

Just a bit confused here....

I would recommend obtaining the utility for your hard drive and writing 0's to the disk rather than just reformatting. This helped me with conflicts between FAT16 and FAT32 before. Though it sounds like it might be a driver problem too. Michelle Fulton

Sounds like the NTFS partition is not being removed properly, or it's hidden because of a DOS (6.x?) version of Fdisk is being used, which won't recognize the partition.
Check the hard disk manufacturer's website for a utility as mhfulton36 has suggested, and write 0's to the drive, then restart, run fdisk, and format the drive. Cheers,
