Win 98 hangs with CD rom connected

Win 98 (first edition) will not boot up with my CDrom attached.&nbsp;&nbsp;If I remove the CD, voila, it boots.&nbsp;&nbsp;I've tried all combinations of master/slave and primary/secondary.&nbsp;&nbsp;Bootlog.txt stops on the second &quot;Initing ESDI_506.PDR&quot;.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to Microsofts support the esdi_506 handles removable storage and may well be causing the problem but rather than issuse the fix for free they want money for it!<br><br>Version of esdi_506 is 4.10.1998.&nbsp;&nbsp;I've tried replacing esdi_506 from known working installations and even from Win 95 (I don't have access to Win 98SE).&nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br>HHHHHEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP<br>

I had the same problem about six months ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;After checking everything I discoverd that my CD-ROM device was defective.&nbsp;&nbsp;Try replacing it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I have seen a similar issue.<br><br>The end result was that the Cdrom drive did not support DMA and since certain versions of Windows 98 (retail/OEM) enable DMA across the board it would cause the computer to hang when booting up.<br><br>There is one of two things you can do, buy a Cdrom that supports DMA or disable the use of DMA for the Cd.<br><br>To do the latter, boot the computer in Safe Mode and run regedit. Find the entry IDEDMADrive1 and set the value to 0 or off. You should also see IDEDMADrive0 =1 which is for the primary hard drive. You can leave this as is.<br><br>dxd

Verify that the CD-ROM works by loading the DOS drivers, boot into DOS and check it's operation.
