Win 98 hangs intermit. when accessing network drive

I can't figure out what the problem is with this one. I have two Win98 machines networked (neither is a brand name). Immediately after bootup, and for a time after that, machine #1 (Win98 SE) can read the two shared drives on machine #2 (Win98 FE) with no problem. After any period of inactivity of #1, any attempt to access the shared drives on machine #2 (from #1) results in a hang-up of machine #1. It does not matter which application tries to do the access -- Microsoft Excel, Win Explorer etc. A Ctrl-Alt-Del and closing the unresponsive application gives control back, but there are still background problems and Win98 will not shut down properly on its own after this. A hard boot is necessary, resulting in scandisk etc. etc.

The odd part in all of this is that Machine #2 can always access machine #1, even when #1 is experiencing the problem. Also, PINGing from the DOS window from #1 to #2 is error free.

The only other factor I can think of is that I use Sygate for internet sharing, and machine #1 is the Sygate server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would suspect the FE machine as the problem. It's obvoiusly a network problem, and as buggy as FE of 98 was, I'd upgrade that machine. This is the simplest thing to do, as well, so it won't hurt. you'll be doing yourself a favor, anyway.

Good Luck! As always, I hope that helped!

Are the network cards the same? this has a hint of a network transmission/timing problem.

You are right, they are different. Is there a way to troubleshoot this without having to go out and buy matching network cards?

This may sound dorky... but I've done it.

Swap the 2 network cards and see if the problem "relocates" to the other machine. If it does, then maybe the 2 cards just don't like each other, and somebody has to go.

..just tryin to help

Only would need one. Match the easiest. Doesn't have to be the same model, just the same manufacturer. And if you have others available try to find two to work together. Generally not that hard. And this was just a hint, not a for sure cause.
