I was hoping that someone might help shed some light on an
intermittent problem that we are experiencing with our Win 98 laptops. The problem is that some users after they login to Netware 5.1 client32 (ver 3.30) the desktop comes up blank; no icons. If you do a CTRL-ALT-Delete it only shows one task of nwrecmsg.exe running. If you do a shutdown it may come back fine, or it may do the same thing. We have tried replacing the dongles to the NIC card. Sometimes that helps. Our desktops don't have this problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Do you run ZENworks (or have Workstation Manager running) on these laptops? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

We do not run ZenWorks and some of these do run Workstation manager. We do not use workstation manager for anything.

I use to have this problem and have found 2 reasons for the problem to show up.

1/ McAffe antivirus.
Uninstall then reinstall McAffe

2/ Slow (less than 128KBit) WAN links.
Press Cancel when the first Login-picture is displayed.
Let Win98 start up. Then Login (Right-clic) on the Red N.

Got a similar problem on Windows98 clients about a year back. If the only thing showing on the desktop is the mouse pointer, then try reinstalling Internet Explorer. It will replace some Windows dll's and after restarting and loging in the Desktop will be back. I.E. acts as a sort of patch for Windows updating the dll's.

How does the IE reinstal fix the problem, explain????

I can't work it out?

What .dll files are replaced (as they are needed for other apps I have to work)

Das,

I have seen this problem as well. Usually all I have to do is a ctl-alt-del and select end task for it to continue loading Win98 on my system. Occassionally, I have to reboot to resolve this issue. It doesn't seem to happen with the NetWare client ver. 3.21.

Good Luck,

Gary.

I too have this problem and have been able to recreate it consistently. What happens is the user is logging in and instead of using the mouse, they hit enter twice very quickly and it hangs the machine. If you control alt delete you will see the nwrecmsg only. Have them use the mouse to click on ok. Then it will continue to login.

This doesn't explain why this happens, but it is a fix for it.

Hope this helps
Millsy
