Hi All,

I have three pc's on a hub with static IP's (same sub/default), and in the same workgroup. One is WIN 98 (SIGH) and the other two are WIN2000. I can connect to the C drives going from 2000-2000, but not 98-2000. It says that I need a password trying to connect to either 2000 from the 98. I can map a folder on the C drive of either 2000, from the 98-2000, but not the C drives. Also, same thing when I try to add a printer that's connected to one of the 2000s. Even using "net use lpt1: \\server\printer" it will say wrong password and that I need to enter the correct one. I REALLY need to get my 98 to print to the 2000...that's the main issue. All 3 pc's have NO passwords. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, DON

I hear this all the time. Sounds like you simply need to create whatever login account you are using on 98, on the 2 2000 pcs. EVEN if there is no password. 2000 is based off nt, designed with microsoft's security model. Your user account must exist within a nt/2000/xp's security database, or you cannot access resources.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

One quick way to get around it is to disable the profile in Win98. When you load Win98, does it prompt you for a username and password? If so, then this option is for you.

See this FAQ for ways to turn it off:

Win2K is picking up the fact that you're using an account that does not register in it's ACL (Access Control List). So the alternative is to add a guest account in 2K using the same username from 98.
