Hello -

I have lost my desktop taskbar. So to do anything (Shutdown, etc) I have to press to press Ctrl --> Esc.

I have checked Taskbar properties/settings and "Always On Top"
is checked. I have unchecked that, Applied/OK, then checked it again.

Restarted PC.... still not visible.

Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for any suggestions. John running W95

Either you have it autohidden with a bright line showing where it is or you have it sized down so you can't see it. Mouse to where you think it is and if the sizer arrow shows then drag the edge out. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Ed's solution is probably linked to the most common problem. If it doesn't work, you might try this: close all applications and open the registry editor. Find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects key and delete the entire key. Reboot and see if that doesn't bring back the taskbar.

The same trick works for Win2k, except you delete the "StuckRects2" key.

This is a fairly common problem and it is odd that documentation for the solution is so sparce.

Good luck and let us know whether or not either approach works. Like Ed says... help increase our knowledge.

Thanks to Edfair and Alt255 for responding.

Edfair, your idea worked... all I had to do was drag the Taskbar up from its' collapsed state. Oops, I should have tried that in the first place... and would have except that prior to the disappearance, my computer had booted up in "safe"
mode.... I figured the invisible Taskbar was the result of something much more serious.

Best regards, John

Thanks for letting us know, John. I'm glad it wasn't something more serious.

You can trust Ed's advice. He's pretty darn sharp when comes to Windows.

Post back the next time you have a problem or you see a way you can help the rest of us. We're all trying to paddle the same boat.
