I've seen this question all over the internet but have not seen a usable answer so I'm asking my fellow experts here on Tek-Tips for help.

We we're an XP shop until recently when we added 2 Win7 Enterprise machines. Now, despite all we have done, the Win7 machines cannot access shared folders on the XP machines nor can they access any of the shared printers on the XP machines. Here's that layout:

ALL machines are members of WORKGROUP.

I have turned the Windows firewall off

McAfee firewall is disabled

There is no domain.

All PC's have static IP addresses (192.168.xxx.xxx)

NetBios over TCP/IP is running on all systems

I have created user accounts on the XP machines that match the usernames/passwords of the Win7 machines

The user accounts have Administrator rights

We have a wired router that is set to factory defaults

The Win7 machines can see the other XP machines when trying to map a network drive but the usernames/passwords are always rejected. Same with trying to use a shared printer - when creating a Local Port, the IP address/share name is not found.

The XP machines can't see the Win7 machines to map a network drive

I have read countless articles about how to make this situation work but not one of them has been successful. I can't believe that this is as hard as it seems. I would appreciate any tips, advice or help any of you can give.

Thanks in advance for your help!

On your Windows 7 machine hover the mouse over the Network icon in the Notification Area. See what is displayed as far as Network Access.

Right-click on the same Network icon and select "Network and Sharing Center". Have a look at the "View Full Map" link.

Make sure things are turned on like -

Network Discovery,
File and Printer Sharing,
Password Protected Sharing,

Have a look at this download for your XP machines and see if you have it installed.

Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120)

Also accessible from the Network icon in the Notification Area is the Diagnose and Repair tool.

Try connecting via "Safe Mode with Networking".

Some Nvidia Chipsets come with Hidden firewalling components as to some Anti Virus software.

Some people try this when they have problems.

Check your IPv6 configuration
"Disabling IPv6"

1. on the Win7 machines turn off IPv6, as it does not play well with older network devices...

2. on the XP machines make sure that the following Hotfix is installed:

Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) Responder (KB922120)

3. I've found that when on a Win7 machine, and you are attempting to access a network share, that the credentials have to be entered in a special way... normally you would enter, USER then PASSWORD and check the box to save the login... instead use the following: HOST\USER then the PASSWORD and check the box to keep the credentials...

Thanks to both of you. I'm downloading the fix now and will let you know the outcome tomorrow.

Linney, BadBigBen...

Thank you both for the LLTD tip. It worked like a champ. Didn't have to do any other configuration on the Win 7 machines at all. I did have to create Win 7 users on the XP machines but that was minor.

If a search at MS had listed this when searching for "Network path not found", I would have a lot more beer in my fridge!

Again, thanks to both of you!
