Hi All,
I am hoping that someone might be able to provide some guidance. I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Server that is our File Server and is connected to an external storage device. This storage device has been defective for some time and the manufacturer is finally replacing the device. I now have the tedious task of migrating all this data from the old device to the new device.
We do not have VMotion or any other applications or programs available for us to easily migrate this data across. We have to rely on the good old Backup and Restore.
The Server currently hosts the following:
- DFS Share that is replicated to another local office and to another overseas office
- Symantec Enterprise Vault is also used for File Archiving
- And there is a Group Policy that Redirects the My Documents folder of each user to a share on this server.
My plan is to Backup this drive (using Symantec Backup Exec) and then change the drive letters so the new storage is using the current drive letter and then restore to the empty drive.
My concerns are that I have no idea on what to expect with DFS. If DFS starts up and the folders do not exist what happens? Will that replicate and wipe the data that is on the remote servers?
Has anyone done a restore of a DFS share to an empty drive? Can anyone tell me what to expect so that I can plan for all possible outcomes?
