I have set up Samba 2.2.7a server running on Redhat 8.0. In the network neighborhood from a Windows 2000 machine I can see the server, I see the shared directory. When I try to access it I am prompt to to
Connect as (I enter username)
Password (I enter password)
I cannot access the directory
Can not even log in as root..

On the Linux machine I have a user cad1 setup. The directory ownership is set to this username.

Here is a portion of my smb.conf file :

[cad1dir]
path = /cad1
valid users = cad1
public = no
writeable = yes
printable = no

Anybody have any clues .....

Thanks,

David

Have you created a samba user? This is not the same as a linux user.

I added a new user in the samba server, but I am getting the following error..

/usr/local/samba/bin/smbpasswd -a USERNAME
Unknown parameter encountered: "host allow"
Ignoring unknown paramenter "host allow"
New SMB password: (entered password)
Retype SMB password: (entered password)
unable to open passdb database.
Added user USERNAME

but still does not work from the WIN 2K machine..

Is this the correct way to setup users in the samba server ?

in your smb.conf what is your 'smb passwd file' set to?

and you'd better change the lines you have with 'host allow' to 'hosts allow' ...
