I have a 2000 windows STD server with AD DNS, and now we want to keep that server and add a new 2003 STD server.
What would be the best way to do it.
more the users over to the 2003 and demote the 2000 server?
As I understand it you have Windows 2000 runnnig active directory. You can add a Windows 2003 server to your domain and then install Active Directory on it. Once Active Directory replicates to the new Windows 2003 Domain Controller you can uninstall Active Directory on the Windows 2000 server.
OK, Everything went great, Now I have two DC, The old 2000 server, and the new 2003 server. Should I and could I just leave both of them as DC? This is a Office that has the old system (that they still want to use) on the 2000 server and the new software on the newer 2003 server.
DNS and AD are install on both servers and all seems fine.
I guess that depends on your need for redundancy. Make sure that you transfer the FSMO roles from the 2000 DC to the 2003 DC if you're going to get rid of the 2000 box
Does not really matter. If you keep both as Domain Controllers you will have one to backup the other. If you remove active directory from the win2k box you will be able to upgrade active directory to Windows 2003 native mode, which has some advantages that I cannot seem to remember at the moment. If you decide to remove Active Directory from the win2k box remember to move DHCP over the win2003 box first (assuming you are it running there). I expect there are some people that would may pipe up on this board and disagree with my "Does not really matter" comment, which is good. Always good to get more opinions.
