I am trying to do a fresh install of Windows 2000 server. This I have done before. Everything goes fine until after it copies all the files to the hard drive and then reboots. The system hangs on a black screen. No GUI for setup. The hard drive light flickers like it is trying to boot form the drive but then it goes out and nothing happens.

Anyone have any ideas....this is the first time I have seen this happen.

I am using a new hard drive which has been Formated (NTFS). If I take the hard drive out and install in another machine to view the contents there is only one folder, the WinNT folder with the files in it.

Try rebooting in using the recovery console and use the FIXMBR command. Sounds like the MBR was possibly corrupted or your hard drive may not have been new after all (could have been running Linux for instance). If that still doesn't work, try running a Linux based recovery CD like Knoppix to see if it find any other partition info. Hope this helps.

This drive had all partitions wiped and then was reformatted. The drive was used only as a storage device. No O/S was instlled on it. Funny thing though...I was also try another drive in meantime which was giving me the same problems. When ask what Directory to install to I typed in a new name Example: winnt001....and it worked.

Thanks for all the ideas

I used this link and since it was a small network of few users, I downloaded the TZEDIT to a network location and on each work station unzipped the file and edited the tzedit
Unfortunately, it did not work as expected on monday but everything is working fine.
It appeared the PDC was taking some time to sychronize with the NTP SERVER.
