I have a dual PIII server that has 256MB PC133 ram in it. I just bought another stick of 256, same type.
After putting in the new stick the server will turn on but it wont boot up.. all the fans start spinning but the hard drives dont turn on and the monitor and keyboard dont get power. Even the power button on the front is non responsive. I know that its not booting all the way because I cant access it from other computers. So i turn it off at the back of the server and remove the new stick of memory. I try to reboot and same story... Everything is the excact way it was before i put in the new stick. I have made sure that all the seatings are secure and that everything is pluged in correctly. Any ideas would be great!
Thanks

Hi,

Here's a few tips & tricks that are intended to help although they might or might not hit the bullseye.

Did you try pressing F8 at startup and booting with "Last good configuration"? I am not even sure if you can make it that far in the boot process.

I assume you made sure both stick were the same speed: PC133?

Then there are buffered/unbufferred issues and parity/non p-parity issues to check before installing RAM. Try to match characteristics on both sticks.

Does the POST (Power-On Self-Test complete?
Can you enter the BIOS?

Try putting the larger capacity RAM stick closer to the CPU when you put both sticks in.

Also, dont forget to modify the page file when you add RAM. It should be at the minimum, twice the new amount of RAM and at the maximum 3 times this amount.

Best of luck,

Simon
