We have a MLX-20L phone, on a Merlin Legend system.

I am thinking of purchasing a Plantronics CS50 wireless headset for our receptionist.
My understanding is that if I purchase the handset lifter this headset works like a regular handset by simply pushing a button on the headset.

Does anyone have any experience with this set-up?

I want to make sure this will work before I purchase it.

Unfortunately, the MLX phones don't integrate well with headsets. There is no dedicated jack for the headset, so it has to be shared with the handset. You can program headset buttons on the phone to simulate lifting of the handset (going "off-hook"), but you also need to use your headset's switch to select between the headset and handset. If you are going back and forth frequently, you may find it inconvenient.

The 4400 series phones have better headset support, as did the classic merlin phones. If headset operation is important, you might want to switch phones.

What jlshelton says is somewhat true.

HOWEVER, if you use a LIFTER it works a little better.

Plantronics offers a lifter as well as the CS50.

As a person who sells phones and modules, I shy away from selling head sets for several reasons:

The girls do not like OVER THE HEAD models,

The Wireless things do not always live up to expectations,

AND OTHER REASONS, too numerous to go into here, the are just too hard to sell and make money.

That being said, if you purchase them direct, with a satisfaction gaurantee, then you may not go wrong.

GOOD LUCK !

Handset lifters are the classic but kludgy solution for all the brain-dead phones out there that don't have good headset support. Fortunately, the mfrs are catching on, and even inexpensive phones now have separate headset jacks and dedicated headset buttons. The better phones use the "industry standard" mini phone plug, so you can use inexpensive standard headsets that plug into cell phones. I've beefed before: I don't see why AT&T/Lucent/Avaya dropped the good headset support from the classic phones when they did the MLX phones. At least they finally fixed it with the 4400 series.
