Can someone tell me how I can get the motherboard to read both the cd rom drive as well as the hard drive at the same time???? I've replaced the hard drive and I know that both hard drives are going perfectly well in another machine... Both computers are XP compatable so that's not the problem... My dilemma is the old compaq machine will read the cd rom when I connect the 40 gig hard drive and when I connect the 8 gig hard drive it will only read the hard drive not the cd rom... It has Linux installed onto it and I don't know how to use Linux so I put the 98 reboot disk in and to reformat the hard drive and it reads the cd rom in (A:\)... but I don't have a 98 windows cd... Will it load up windows 2000 from the 98 reboot disk or do I need the 98 windows... I would really appreciate it if someone can give me some advice how I can get the computer to read both drives and how to take Linux off the computer???

Hi the other motherboard was loading windows xp through linux... the 40 gig hard drive was from out of my old work computer and running windows xp... the 8 gig was running windows 2000... if that's any help... but when I run a boot analyser cd disk... it tells me that the system is still running on linux.... I was told to get a 98 windows boot disk and it will kick the disk back into windows load up.... but I can only get either the hard drive or the cd rom to go even when it was on the linux operating system.... If someone could explain to me how to use linux I would use it... but because I don't know anything about it I don't want to touch it.... Cheers

OK, if there is no information on the hdd you want to save and if you want to run 98se or any other OS, you're gonna need a boot disk and the install cd for that OS.

Can you post back exactly what you want to do and let us know what you have access to for an operating system?

Linux does have a learning curve just like windows but you can do it if you don't own a copy of windows. No one here or on most other forums will tell ya how to steal an OS so let's just take it from square one.

Also, let us know if you understand boot order in bios so we can boot from a floppy or cd. We're here to help and don't look down on you for any reason.

Awesome thankyou I have windows XP O/S... I will download the boot disk off my other computer and see how that works... I know that you have to have the jumpers exactly as the picture looks on the front of it...

As for the bios I know that you should have the hard drive on the master and the cd rom on the slave... but that's about my limit...

By having the 98 Windows O/S will that make the cd rom and the hard drive work at the same time? And does that mean that it will do the same if I just get the reboot from the XP O/S Reboot disk?

If you could give me anymore feedback on it I'm open to recieve anything I can get...

I was told that you need to reboot the computer with 98 windows boot disk... but no one said anything about needing the 98 O/S as well... At least I have something to go on now thanks to your imput...
