Will not recognize a community name for gateway

Error Installing HP Openview. Will not recognize community name.
"Enter the community name (SNMP password) for your default gateway XXX.XXX.XXX (###.###.###.###)." => "The community name public for the default gateway ###.###.###.### (XXX.XXX.XXX) may not be correct or the gateway is not currently responding to SNMP. Would you like to re-enter the community name?"
X# = shows the name or ip for our gateway. Thanks,

Can you confirm that the password (the community name) is set to 'public'? Mike

Actually, no. I am having a difficult time verifying everything is correct on the HP Advancestack. It should be, the program was working passed this initial state at one time. I am able to get into the hub, but I can't find out where to go to verify this password.
