Hello:

I've been given a used 40GB Maxtor N40P Hard Drive and am wondering if my OLD 1998 Computer/Motherboard, etc. will accept this large hard drive or not.

Must I create 8GB partitions or can I make two partitions of 15GB and 25GB ????

I tried this drive as PRIMARY SLAVE - but got a HARD DRIVE FAILURE error which I figure is caused by my inability to change the JUMPERS to "Slave" since these JUMPERS do not appear anywhere on the rear of the hard drive.

Now, I want to just install this 40GB drive as PRIMARY MASTER . . . if this is possible.

Thank you for any info.

A '98 vintage computer? Probably the BIOS can't accept that large a drive. I have a March '00 computer that has a limit at 32GB. You could get the drive overlay software from that basically 'lies' to the BIOS about what it is.

The jumpers have to be set properly for any drive to be recognized. If on the same IDE data cable one has to be Master and the other Slave. Most Maxtor drives use a jumper on J50 for a Master/Single drive and no jumper on J50 for a Slave.

If the computer is using Cable Select the the jumpers on both drives have to be on CS and the Master is on the marked end plug with the Slave on the middle plug, the cable determines which is which.

Consult the Hardware Vendor. This depends on the Motherboard and the BIOS, not Windows 98. Some people use special program like EZ Max to use larger hard drives. You can download the special program from the Maxtor website to solve this issue.
