Does anyone know of any problems when migrating AIX 4.3.0 to AIX 4.3.3 ??

1) some people had problems with the microcode not being updated on their
machines before doing the upgrade...

2)and not doing the preinstall checks to prove a stable system before migration:

like
lppchk -v
lppchk -c
#usrck -n ALL
#grpck -n ALL

3) AIX requires certain user and group definitions to remain unchanged. Verify
that your /etc/passwd has entries matching the following:

root:!:0:0::/:/bin/ksh
deamon:!:1:1::/etc:
bin:!:2:2::/bin:
sys:!:3:3::/usr/sys:
adm:!:4:4::/var/adm:
uucp:!:5:5::/usr/lib/uucp:
guest:!:100:100::/home/guest:
nobody:!:4294967294:4294967294::/:

Verify that your /etc/group file has entries matching the following:

system:!:0:root
staff:!:1:
bin:!:2:root,bin
sys:!:3:root,bin,sys
adm:!:4:bin,adm
uucp:!:5:uucp
mail:!:6:
security:!:7:root
cron:!:8:root
printq:!:9:
audit:!:10:root
ecs:!:28:
nobody:!:4294967294:nobody
usr:!:100:guest

4) Initial Paging Space Requirements
Aix Version 4.3 requires the initial paging space (/dev/hd6) to be a minimum
of 64 MB in size

Make sure that you have enough hard disk space for this migration!. Disk
Space Requirements (recommendations): (this is free space, besides what
you already have installed as far as filesets)
You can check the free space in the filesystems with the following command: #df -kt
/ 16 MB
/usr 256 MB
/var 16 MB
/tmp 16 MB
80MB of unallocated physical partitions in the rootvg

5) hd5 not large enough The boot logical volume (hd5) must be at least 8
megabytes. The system you are installing has a boot logical volume smaller
than this, and the system does not have enough free contiguous physical
partitions on diskname to increase the size of the boot logical volume.
Please reboot in normal mode and correct this problem, or restart the
installation and choose an overwrite install. Use the lspv -M diskname
command to see the current allocation map of the disk.
OR

Error: No space available to create a larger boot logical volume. In order
to proceed with this installation the size of the boot logical volume (hd5)
must be increased to 8 MB. At this time there are not N contiguous
physical partitions available on the boot disk (diskname) for recreating the
larger boot logical volume. You must free up this space by removing or
relocating one or more logical volumes or file systems from diskname. Use
lspv -M diskname to see its current partition allocation map.

6) Make sure your equipment is supported in aix 4.3.3

Unsupported Hardware on AIX Version 4.3

7016 PowerServer Model 730
7007 Noteboot Workstation Model N40
7051 Powernetwork Dataserver
7249 Model 851 and 860
7247 Models 821, 822, and 823
9076 PowerParallel System SP1

Graphic adapters not supported
Power GTO Accelerator Adaptor
Power Gt1 Graphic Adapter 1 Bit
Power Gt1b ISO Graphic Adapter
Power Gt1x Graphic Adapter
2780 High Performance 8 bit 3 D color graphics processor
2781 High Performance 24 bit 3D color graphics processor
2782 24 bit Z Buffer Solid rendering option
2783 24 bit Color Graphics Fram Buffer Upgrade
7235 GTO acceletor, feature 4350
Gt1 Graphics Adapter, feature 4308
Gt1b Graphics Adapter, Feature 2804
Gt1x Graphics Adapter, feature 9280
High Performance 24-bit 3 D color Graphics Processor
High Performance 8 Bit 3 D color Graphics Processor

Remember non-IBM graphics adapters must verify that the adapter is
supported on AIX Version 4.3.

Network Terminal Accelerator is not supported in AIX Version 4.3.

6) And keeping a paper copy of your ttys and settings, printers and setting and sendmail.cf if you did changes to it.......

7) Of course a mksysb and paper copies of configuration files.

Otherwise it is relatively easy. yes.

hilarity,

As usual AIXQUEEN has provided you with some useful information.

migrate is the wrong word if you are already on 4.3.0, it is simply insert the AIX 4.3.3 cd's and run

smitty update_all

You only migrate between releases i.e. 4.2 to 4.3 not sub releases.

I would recommend a patch level though either ML-07 or ML-08.

Best of luck
