I cannot install the WPC54GS adapter card on the Sony Vaio PCG-V505AX notebook. When I plug in the card, Windows recognizes it and tries to install the driver. Then it complains that there is a problem starting the card. The error code 10 is displayed in the message.

NRGeti,

This is where we tell you RTFM (read the manual)

If you go to Linksys you can download the manual (PDF)

under installation it says that -

NOTE: YOU MUST RUN THE SETUP WIZARD TO INSTALL THE SOFTWARE BEFORE INSTALLING THE HARDWARE

It does not want Windows to detect - it has it's own software that it must use to work properly - try reading the PDF and see if that helps!

Hope this helps some!

You don't have the full story behind my request. I have installed dozens of Linksys cards and know exactly how to do it. The software should go first before plugging in the card. (Actually, it doesn't really make any difference since I have done it both ways. Especially reinstalling after something broke.)

The problem I ran into is that the install wizard from the CD complains about the Linksys driver being already installed and I should uninstall it first. It suggests I go to the Start menu and use the Linksys group uninstall shortcut. However, there is no driver or monitor installed. How could there be since it never accepted the installation. There is nothing referencing Linksys anywhere in the registry either.

That is why I asked the question. Is the Sony PC card slot proprietary in such a way as to block the Linksys card? Their tech support refused to offer any opinion on 3rd party hardware and said I had to buy a Sony card. They cost $280 which kind of says that the PC slot is proprietary.

NRGeti,

Thanks for the information - to get good responses you should give all the details that you just did so we know what you have done and what you have not done.

It is hard to guess what you have done and what you have not done so when we respond we usually start with the easy stuff first!

I have worked with Linksys devices for years - mostly with Dells and I find installing their software works best, since we now know that you have tried that I would contact Linksys support - they have always been great when I had to contact them in the past - it might be a bad driver or some other glich or if it just does not work with Sony - they are sure to know that!

Hope this helps!

I know I didn't give all the details originally as I was just trying to simplify the question to a Yes or No answer in case someone had actually had the experience of working with the Sony. I already have gone around and around with chat sessions at both Sony and Linksys.

It took awhile before the Linksys technician understood my situation and then said they would send me a private copy of their registry cleaner that MAY solve the problem. So far I have not received it.

I will try again.

The Sony PC is the only brand that has given me trouble. I have installed Linksys on all other including MACs, Dells and Gateways and was always successful. The MACs are sometimes tricky but doable.

No problems putting a Linksys card in my Sony Vaio.

I finally decided to try the Recovery CD. This fixed the problem.

Hi NRGeti,

I read your request for help - and the responses - with great interest because I have the same problem with the same equipment (WPC54GS adapter card and Sony Vaio PCG-V505AX notebook). My laptop (used) did not come with recovery CDs. Is there another way to make the code 10 go away and fix the problem?

I read the manual - installed the software first - went to the linksys and sony sites - no luck. Please help if you can.

Thanks
