I see a fair amount of Java related jobs, but the job description usually wants someone with at least 3-5 years of experience of Java programming, JSP, Java Servlets, some brand or another of J2EE server (WebLogic, and WebSphere seem to be the two of the more popular ones), etc. In essence, you really need to know Java. Entry level Java jobs are scarce. The best bet to break into Java is to: 1. Be working somewhere already and volunteer/ask to work with Java programmers.
2. Community service type work, where you volunteer your skills, and pick up as much as you can.
I agree with jwdcfdeveloper, most Java job postings I see are not for Java per se, but generally for skills in one of the proprietary implementations of the J2EE spec along with the set of other items bundled under the same brand name. Typically there are requirements for specific DBMS experience as well. I don't recall seeing any for a person without work experience either.
I do seem to see the same jobs posted and reposted repeatedly. This might mean:
* The outfits are growing and need more and more staff.
* They have high turnover for whatever reason.
* They get a lot of applicants to whom Java means Javascript, and "Heck yeah, I have Javascript on my personal web site, I'll apply for THAT job!" Or in other words they don't get a good pool of candidates to interview.
