Hi,

One of our clients has 2 offices separated by a distance of 250m, so to enable inter connectivity we have laid multimode fiber optic cable. Both the offices are using Linksys SRW224G4P PoE switch with SFP ports. The main office hosts the Avaya IP Office 500 PABX system. The 27 telephones are distributed among the two offices. So if a person dials an extension from one office to another office, will his call pass through the multimode fiber. Do we need to do any additional configurations or anything inside the switch or some hardware has to be placed in front of it.

A swift reply is highly appreciated.

Forget about trying to dial a remote phone (although if that works, then mission accomplished!). You need to test the basic stuff first.

1/ Connect the two linksys switches.
Test: check physical connectivity: link light? LLDP neighbor?
Test fails: check switchports are enabled. Check SFPs are correct for the fibre grade/distance. Check switch recognises SFPs as correct. Swap fibre cores around the other way on one end.

2/ Put a host with the correct IP address on the remote switch.
Test1: Can you ping it from another host on the same switch in the same subnet?
Test fails: Check Windows firewall. Check basic onnectivity. Check Switchport configuration is enabled and in correct VLAN.
Test2: can you ping the remote host in OFFICE2 from a host on the local switch in OFFICE1 in the same subnet?
Test fails: check interconnected switchports on each side both have identical VLAN config. Check MAC-address-table on switches.

As long as the system is a full VoIP systems & using VoIP handsets, not analouge or digital handsets then the answer is YES.

But check this out as avaya IP 500 PBX is a hybrid system and can opperate with a mixture of VoIP/Digital/Analogue handsets all using cat5 cabling but only the VoIP handsets talk IP and will work over a the LAN connection.

Guess a quick way to identify this - do the phones in the main site connect through the Linksys switch or onto a seperate phone patch pannel?

If its the switch then you have a VoIP system and all will be well.
If its a voice patch pannel then you have either digital or analogue phones and No the devices wont run over fibre.
