Has anyone tried to run dBase for DOS version 5 which says it has 32-bit support (or any DOS programs for that matter) with Windows XP 64-bit beta installed on an AMD 64-bit processor? Intel is coming out with a 64-bit version in a few months but for now it's only AMD. This excerpt from a news article makes me wonder if and how many DOS programs will run:
What we can't expect is support for Microsoft DOS... Goodbye DOS. Sixty four bit Windows won't run 16-bit code and so 16-bit installers could be tricky too. However, if there's a 32-bit installer, Windows will seek it out and run it. As far as 32-bit file system filter drivers and kernel mode drivers are concerned, Win64 XP will need them to be native - that means that 32-bit kernel system drivers will fall over.
What I'm not sure whether dBase 5 for DOS is 16-bit with a 32-bit wrapper, or if it was fully ported to 32-bit. Since it was still a DOS version, I'm fearing that it has lots of 16-bit code. Surely at some point even the last of the old die-hard DOS fans will have to throw in the towel.
