Hello,

We have a windows 2003 server network with active directory and no exchange.

my boss just got fired today and i have to change the administrator password on the dc and all other servers.

If i change the admin password on the dc will it affect anything like active directory or anything? One server that i have to change the password is not the DC but it is running a form of sql for a software package that we have.

You should not have problems, but before you make the change you might want to investigate if there are any services launching on any of the servers using the Admin credentials. If there are, you will need to change the password for them (and any scheduled tasks too) manually.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Markdmac is correct. This is a good way to find out which services are running under which accounts. And, you won't know until the service is restarted (most likely during a reboot).

With that in mind, make sure that you have specific service accounts (users) setup for each service that needs to run under a particular credential on all your servers.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

thanks, i called all our software tech support already and they said no services are running under our admin password

yes the posts were very helpful, AND QUICK!

A good answer deserves good feedback. Here's one for ya, markdmac. [purpleface]

I'm onboard!

Thank you! Glad that the advice was helpful.

ProjectPEte, remember to ALSO look at scheduled tasks which are more likely to be running in the Admin context.

I hope you find this post helpful.

so we are talking about changing the built in administrator account password in active directory right

That's right. That is the Domain Admin.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Glad I could help you. I do this for free, you know. So the only joy in it is getting a little feedback. Otherwise it's not worth the time...

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

If you find some in the SERVICES snapin that ARE using the Admin account, and you change the password for them, restart the services right away to ensure you're not going to have a problem if/when the server reboots.
