I am building a new backup server. Can I run BE 8.6 or 9.0 on a Windows XP Pro box, or do I need to buy Windows 2000 ?Server?

Thanks.

Anyone? I tried to use Veritas' Live Chat and that was worthless. I waited for 30 minutes waiting for a rep to come on.

Thanks.

tes you can but you need to disable a couple of things first.I'l look for the white paper on this.

Great. Let me know as soon as you can. Thanks.

I actually just installed BE 8.6 on a Windows XP Pro machine using a Quantum DLT 8000 drive and have had complete success backup up every night. This is just my experience........not a suggestion!

I have been evaluating BE 9.0 on a Windows 2000 pro machine, so Win XP Pro should not be a problem you can run in Win 2K compatability mode anyway if issues do occur, but as they share a common kernel base, there should be no problems.

BE 9.0 has support for Windows server 2003 anyway, so XP should not be an issue.

Just from my experience, 9.0 still seems to be very buggy... but I could be wrong. I support tape drives all day long. I highly suggest disabling RSM (Removable Storage Manager - service listed as Removable Storage) if you're going to use a 3rd party backup software. I would stay with 8.6 for now and wait for 9.0 to become more stable.

Just about a month ago I was talking to a guy who had 8.5 running on 5 servers. Upgraded 2 of them to 9 and the tape drives stopped working (were working fine w/8.5). After some troubleshooting we determined the drives to be fully functional and that it was most definately a software issue. The customer decided to re-install 8.5 on the servers that were upgraded and stick with it on the other 3.
