Let me be honest i duno the difference between wi-fi and wireless. I hope its the same thing. Anyway my prob is i

downgraded from Vista to XP and now i cannot get the icon for wireless connections at the bottom-right of the

screen.

i was wondering if i will be able to connect to a wifi hotspot or any existing internet connection close to me.

any help will be appreciated....thx

I believe during the dowgrading process i have lost the driver for wifi or something like that..

anyway my system specs are : Toshiba s4747... Windows XP..

In the laptop world WiFi and Wireless are effectively the same thing. (WiFi actually stands for Wireless Fidelity).

You need to make sure that the wireless device in your laptop is actually switched on. I am not familiar with the Toshiba model you have, but there is usually either a small slide switch on the front or side edge of the case, or there will be a function key to switch it on and off. The relevant function key will have a small antenna logo on it, and will be actioned by holding down the <Fn> key and pressing the Function key at the same time.

Once the device is enabled, you may find that Windows can drive this device itself using its own Windows Zero Configuration service, or you may have to obtain a driver from the Toshiba website (downloads). If the latter, you would probably need either an Atheros or a Realtek chipset driver.

Hope that gets you on the right track...

In Control Panel/ Network Connections, right-click on the Adapter, do you have any Local Area Connection Properties from your Wireless Adapter that you can check that you have checked the box "Show icon in Notification Area when connected"?
