Our office uses a SonicWall Pro230 firewall. I have rules set to block a certain IP range from internet access, 192.168.1.15 - 192.168.1.20. One of those addresses, 192.168.1.16, needs to have internet access during non-working hours. So, I set 2 more rules: one allows access to that address from 12:00 to 13:00 (lunchtime). The other allows access from 17:00 to 8:00 (after 5PM and before 8AM). The computer is now able to access the internet during the lunch hour, but not the other non-work times.
I initially thought the problem was the firewall. I even went so far as to erase the firmware and start over from scratch. That didn't fix the problem. So, I tried changing the timed rules to allow access to one of the other blocked computers (I should have tried that in the first place). The computer was able to get on like it should. So, now I know the problem is with the 192.168.1.16 machine, but I don't know what. Why does it work during one allowed period but not another?
Another problem I have with that same machine is that I cannot NET SEND messages to it. There are 50 computers on our network, some Win2000 some WinXP. I can NET SEND all of them except that one. I have checked to make sure that Messenger Service is running.
The network access and NET SEND both worked about a month and a half ago. They both seemed to have stopped working at around the same time which is why I think they might be related. By the way, it is a WinXP box with all of its Windows Updates installed, it is connected to the same hub as several other machines, none of which have any of these problems. What the ..... ?
