System runs XP Pro SP2
A few days ago, I noticed my laptop getting extremly sluggish. I checked my process list and found vgrntfy.exe was maxed out at 100%. After a little registry search, I noticed that it was (supposedly) part of Microsofts AntiSpyware proggy. So, I uninstalled from add/remove programs, rebooted and the file was still running after the uninstall. So, I cleaned out the registry of any vgrntfy.exe entries, found vgrntfy.exe in windows\system and deleted it. Everything was fine for a day or so.
Tonight, I turned my laptop on and vgrntfy.exe was once again running. I googled it, nothing found. Searched computer cops startup list, nothing found. Ran trend micros housecall, nothing found. Scanned with spybot, adaware, spysweeper, hijack this and avg. Nothing. Took the hard drive out, slaved it into another system, scanned for viruses. Nothing.
So, I went and cleaned it out of my registry and deleted the file from windows\system again. Rebooted. The system now hangs just after I log in, before it boots to the desktop. If I press ctrl+shift+escape to bring up the process list, it instead brings up the calculator. When I close the calc, it brings up the direct x diag tool. If close that, the system just sits idle. Nothing happens.
It does the same thing in safe mode. It also does the same thing if I try to log on as a different user.
Very wierd. Anyone seen this b4? Any ideas other than formatting?
