I have been using Illustrator for a number of years now at a beginner level.
I create layouts where sometimes I place logos, or pictures and then from my final Illustrator file I export to jpg for sending over the internet.
Lately, I've noticed that the files are HUGE. Is there some way that the actual Illustrator file can remain at a manageable (max 2 MB) size, but that the pictures (that sometimes are 100 MB) are linked, or ....????
Help!

.... also when I link the files (eps) I cant see what's going on in my Illustrator file .... how do I see it all????

Yuu:

One way to limit file sizes is to delete all unused swatches, symbols, styles, and brushes. Another thing you can try is to turn off pdf compatibility in the save dialog.

Keep in mind, also, that if you are embedding raster images, any compression will be lost even if the raster was a jpeg or tiff, so a small jpeg can turn into a huge piece of memory (the uncompressed size is roughly what an uncompressed psd of the same size would be).

CS especially is known for file size bloating, and even though the tips above will help, file sizes are still larger on average than in older versions.

You might try to save it in Illustrator 10 format. In Illustrator CS the option to save it as "Legacy Illustrator" comes in the File->Export option.

thanks you guys for the tips.
I am going to try them and let you know.
I am using Ill. 10.

I'm no expert, but periodically my small files (less than 2mb) suddenly become 30, 50, even 1or 200 mb files. Yesterday I had a 250k file turn into a 500mb when sending it to print.

If pasting the artwork into a new file doesn't help, next step is deleting my ai.prefs file. If that doesn't work, reloading the program.

Using 9.0.2.

Just my problems. Hope it helps.
