Just trying to save as much space on a form with bar codes. We are using code 128 ( we could use others). Is there a magic formula to determine how much space a bar code will need to be scanned with a high degree of readability? We are using hhp 7200. laser printer 600 dpi. Is it trial and error to determine the smallest width and height etc.. We are using crystal reports to generate bar coded warehouse pick tickets.. Is there a min font size.. I have been just been going on trial and error with more errors than success.. Is there a magic formula to reduce space and achieve high scan success rates???

We use about 4 different makes of scanners on our site, from till scanners (metrologic) to warehouse scanners (hhp). What I've found is that the scanner is the important part, not so much the print. If the scanners are good, you can get away with some tiny barcodes (both height and width wise), if they are not (don't know your 7200's) your employees will lynch you if you make their job more difficult! Most printers seem capable of printing good barcodes nowadays.

Do you need an alphanumeric barcode? If numeric only is OK, there are some codes that will go pretty small. To be honest though, trial and error is a fairly effective way of testing with your particular scanners.

Thanks for the information, I wondered why I had a rope hanging on my office door the other day.
