I have a windows 2000 server . Every once in a while the printers will be gone. After I reboot they all come back? What could cause this to happen?
Any ideas?

Check that your spooler service hasn't hung.

It was the print spooler!!
Thank you!!

You may want to troubleshoot that further to find out what is causing the spooler to hang. Reason is we had a print monitor hang last summer and it eventually crashed the server completely, which in turn brought the whole network down because (silly us), we were using our main server as a print server.

Just a thought.

Thank You I will.
You have been a great help.

To help prevent this from happening go to

Administrative Tools > Services > Print Spooler > Recovery

Set First, Second and Subsequent Failures to "Restart the Service".

The next time it fails the service will automaticly try to restart.

would there be a way to have the server notify me if the service went down?

You could set Subsequent Failure to Run a Program. And make a batch file to send a command line email notification. You don't really want to use messanger these days.
