This has happened to my system ever since installing a Lexmark Z-25 inkjet printer. Initially, I thought it was related to the original driver located on the installation CD as not being signed. However, after dowloading a signed driver from Lexmark the problem still persists. I've discovered recently that XP Pro is dependent on certain applications being located in specific folder locations, i.e., Administrative Tools\Services. Deleting old print drivers can also negatively affect new printer installation by disabling critical dependencies which prevent installation of any printers at all. My background is in Television Engineering so I find that tracing down problems always begins where the problem first began and then systematically check each component associated with the equipment in a process of elimination. However, barring equipment failures, the problem seems to originate with the operating system itself being the source of the actual reboot problem. I noticed that many services in Admin. Tools\Services are not user configurable which states that the only option available is to "Restart the Computer." Which begs the question, "Why?" Sending Microsoft an "Error Report" yields no useful information, and Lexmark offers no assistance either. It seems that XP was suppose to address these types of errors to minimize system instability problems. I'm not computer wizard, but my senses tell me that Microsoft needs to add full configurability to all services listed under "Adminstration Tools\Services," because, it forms such a critical internal function of the operating system. This addition would certainly go a long way to improving system stability.
