Why won't our HP Color Laserjet 4066 select paper from the bypass tray

When we initially installed this printer, it would automatically select paper from the bypass tray (tray #1) if that tray was loaded. It will not longer do this, and we cannot seem to direct it to do so using any of the menu directions in the printer menu. We normally use the bypass tray to feed heavier stock paper. This paper is within the weight that the printer instructions state as acceptable. But, the heavier paper, when fed through the built-in tray often jams the printer. How do we direct or program the printer to select paper from the by-pass tray as the default or primary tray if paper is present in that tray?
