Gent I have a problem.

I have on user the Director of the Agency continues to drop off the network. We have checked and changed his nic from Intel to 3Com more than onece. We have changed His Computer two times I know of. We have checked and changed the patch cable from his desktop and from the patch panel to the switch 3524. The only things we have not done is rewire from the patch panel to his wall connection. We Read the statement from Microsoft about this problme with Win 2000 and 3com. The fix they say, uninstall the nic drivers and reinstall them? This is not working either.

What can I use to monitor his connection so I can see what is going on? Have you ever had this kink of problme?

Hi jkeeper,

Sounds like you need a hardware tool that troubleshoots layer 1 & 2 problems. Replacing hardware blindly is never a real solution. Layer 1 - It may be that there is impulse noise (motor or generator) nearby or faulty connectors causing the link to fail. Try using a cabling certification tool (to at least Cat5 cable) with noise detection capability. Layer 2 - Some NICs have problems auto-negotiating (speed & duplex) with certain switches. If your switch port is set to Auto, then try statically setting it. Once you rule out these problems, then it may be drivers or applications causing problems.

Monitor the PC by spaninng/mirroring the PC's port on the switch or connect a hub inline with the PC and perform a packet capture.

Well, let me start by saying "you all know of the finger pointing done in the business". This is no different, we have been dealing with this problem for over 8 months. We had done everything but move his office.

Here is what took place. The Dir had given right to 5 other
plus his Sec: to access his email. He would access his email at home (evenings. I am told he would sometime leave it open when he came into work the next day.

His Sec: would arrive at 7:30am and log him in and open his email, then walk over to her desk and login to his email also. Who knows how many of the other 5 were logged in also.

When the Director came in to work, he would do the short-cut login "ctrl+alt+delete" and make a bee line for his email. Of course Exchange would say" these service could not be completed".

Now you must understand, that the users exchange folders are stored on a special drive for safe keeping because of nightly backup. Since he could not get the personal folder
someone said, he has been dropped off the network (WRONG ANSWER)!

I have been telling them (co-network worker) that this is not the case. I have been having the same problem. I would have email open at my work station, and then try to open email at some remote location at work and I would get the same message. It's a case of not listening, well, huh?

It is clearly a application (Microsoft) problem or case of rights. We finally got the lower ranking mangers to listen after they were able to "reinact the error".

I am sorry for wasting your time, but thanks for your help.
I am still learning. "Problem solved"
