I understand the function of pwunconv to remove the shadow file and place the encrypted passwords of the shadow file to the passwd file. But why would you need to use this?

'pwunconv' only works on manually created entries in /etc/passwd. Maybe you would use it to delete a bunch of users at once, since you would only have to remove them from one file after running 'pwunconv'??
