Why the striped FS cannot be extended?

Hi,
We have many filesystems that are full/nearly full. However our sysadmins say that they cannot extend the filesystem since they are striped.

Just wanted to know why the striped filesystems cannot extended?

IMHO, it can be done by backing up, recreating the lv with new PVs added to increase the stripe width, and then restoring your data on a bigger striped lv.
