Why numbered bullets don't work with 1st line?

Hi,using WIN, CS3.

I created a numbereded bulleted list. Say there are 10 items.

I want to insert a new item at #3. I can press enter and 'push down' #3 and lists gets renumbered automatically.

so far so good.

but If i want to put something different at #1 spot, pressing enter recreates #1, and does not automatically renumber list.

What do I need to do to make this work?

...in bullets and numbering check you have the "continue from previous" selected...

...if you don't have it selected ensure you add the line break/return at the end of the first line, not before it...

...to add, it is possible you have 'start at' on the first line, and 'continue from previous' on all the other lines...

...therefore if you enter a line return to move the text down, you end up with number one again...
