I'm a web designer/developer interested in forward compatibility for sites I create.

Assuming XML will eventually replace HTML and XHTML as the defacto web markup language, is there any reason to not start creating XML-only sites today (assuming one is not worried about losing the ~3% of users browsing with older browsers)?

Also, does anyone know how well XML sites are handled by text-only browsers (i.e., Lynx) and browsers for persons with disabilities?

Why are you assuming XML will replace XHTML? XHTML is XML! The future of access to the web will not be limited to PC's, but more and more mobile technologies. Standards play a vital part in this, the main benefits being accessiblity, effiency and maintainability. The future is a variety of XML technologies; XHTML for documents, XForms for forms, SVG for graphics, plus others emerging. You should concentrate on designing sites with these in mind if you are really interested in forward compatibility.
