I have been rolling out Virus Scan 4.51 over the past 2 months and am getting feedback from users regarding erractic, but not damaging, behavior on their machines. The weird behavior is a slight freeze when working. For example, if using Word and typing, the system freezes for 5-30 seconds then continues as normal. Users have reported this behavior in VARIOUS apps not just Word. This did not happen before.

I install Mcafee via EPO and enable all options : System, Email, Download, and Internet. When I check memory usage via Windows Task Manager, I can see the various parts of Mcafee taking up chunks of memory (webscanX.exe is using over 9MB of memory alone).

I want minimal impact from Mcafee on the desktop. I want System Scan to scan EVERYTHING coming into the machine. Users cannot download anything. We have a strong firewall, DMZ, and mail sweeping software in place.

I'm thinking I should just go ahead and disable Email, Download, and Internet options to minimize memory usage on the desktop. Aren't some of these options redundant if System Scan is enabled? All feedback would be much appreciated.

You can safely disable the Download Scan, Internet Filter and Mail Scan as these are already being covered by the System Scan option. This is what we've done. Won't matter much though since we're currently migrating to VSE 7.0

OK. I will do this. I have also read that heuristic scanning is not always good to leave on, mainly due to false positives. Is this true? Again I am look ing for minimal impact.

I have also starting toying with VSE 7.0 Would you say it's

a) a MAJOR improvement, MUCH better,easier than VS 451
b) a minor upgrade, a few things updated
c) not much different than VS 451
d) GREAT, if you like the color red! (a.k.a don't even bother unless you are having major difficulty with VS 451).

THANKS

To answer your question: A

We've finished rolling out 7.0 to over 3,500 machines in a couple of days. Went without any major hitches, except for some machines who inadvertently shutdown during the installation.

Hope this eases your pains.
