If the server that the shared folder is on fails, you no longer have access to the share. DFS provides replication and redundancy to the share. The share would actually exist on 2 or more different servers. Users don't need to map to each server, they just map to the DFS share and DFS will point them to the server. If one of the servers goes down, they can still access the share from a second server.
