Why isn't image frame background transparent?

I've placed a vector graphic from Illustrator into indesign - but the backgound of my image frame is white when the image is placed. I need it to be transparent - how is this done?

And no, I haven't left the background colour of the frame as white.

What version of Illustrator? AI oe EPS? Was it saved without a background preview (Ill version 8 or higher)?

Set the screen display of the graphic to high quality under the View menu or by right-clicking on the graphic.
