Please can you help.

I am running Novell 5.1 and have run into some problems. At approx 00:00 hours every day the server crashes and the following is displayed:

Volume SYS dismounted due to drive deactivation.
02/04/2003 00:02

Error writing FAT table for Volume serverName/Sys.
02/04/2003 00:010

Error writing to the directory on ServerName/Sys.
02/04/2003 00:012

Error reading both copies of the directory on ServerName/Sys.
02/04/2003 00:010

Policy Manager:Connection 33 is using a 'Grace' connection to server because no licenses were installed.

Can someone please tell me why this is happening and what I can do to stop it.

Thanks. let's help one another, not hinder.

Is your SYS volume low on diskspace and have you got compression enabled on the volume? 00:00 is usually the time when compression kicks in.

Check out the following TID. It refers to checking hardware for errors:

For now, to disable file compression type:

SET ENABLE FILE COMPRESSION = OFF

at your server console. -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I have an 8GB drive for the SYS vol and 7GB is free!

I do not have compression running as I have never set it to "ON".

Thanks.

Compression is set to ON as default. When you create a volume under NetWare 5.x, unless you specifically switch compression off on the volume, it is always on. The only real way to get compression off (without recreating the volume) is the set command I mentioned earlier. I would check the setting and switch it off to see if the SYS volume dismounts tonight. -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks, I'll try that. let's help one another, not hinder.

Hi,

FYI....check out the following TID on drive deactivation.

10021917

Hope it helps
Good luck

What services or third party software are on this server? Are you running a tape backup utility at this time? I also see an error stating that the liscing may have problems. Do you have any errors running dsrepair?

Also check the abend.log file. It may give you some clues.

I have Arcserve 7 running on the server but when I load,it crashes the server instantly.

Do you think Arcserve is the problem?

Is SYS still dismounting with compression turned off? Have you applied the latest Arcserve/NetWare Service Packs -----------------------------------------------------

It may be a controller issue but I would check the abend.log file (it's in the system directory and can be opened with notepad.) See if it shows anything during the time it dismounts. It will also help you see why ArcServe is crashing.

I agree with TheLad about applying the latest patches. Since you do not have a way to back up the data you may want to copy the data from your server to a workstation just to be safe. Also run dsrepair and vrepair to make sure there is no issues with the tree and file allocation table.

If I remember correctly when I had a 5.1 server I had some issues with licensing. I had to find all my license info and remove it from the system. I then applied the patches and re-added all the licenses to fix the problem. I am not sure if this is your problem but you may want to find all your license disks to be safe.
