Have 800 MHZ AMD processor/128MB SDRAM Windows millenium edition - trying to find out why my pc is crashing all the time!
The screen flashes black with a high pitch noise - system does not respond at all. Have restored system and still happens.
Had my hard drive replaced and months later this started. Can anyone tell me what the prob is and what i can do?

Check for a virus?
Try someone elses monitor, (don't break it though).
Finally try resetting your BIOS.

CapsMan.

I would check the CPU fan to see if the processor is over-heating. Check your video card as well to see if there is a cooling fan on it as well. Usually a over-heating problem will sound an alarm.

if it is a high pitched whining noise, that is usually a failing power supply on the monitor... does it work, but just for a while? then go blank? when it does go blank, press the num lock key... if the key turns off and on, then the system is fine, but i would bet the monitor is going. Shane
and now for the impressive abbreviations:
DOA, SOL, AWOL, PEBKAC, id10t, FUBAR

1: Check the connection to your monitor isn't loose (or damaged pins) as this can cause the high pitched whine and flashing blank screen - looks as if the PC's crashed.
2: Try another monitor.
3: Check/swap your video card. Make sure the card isn't being overclocked by software.

I doubt it's an overheating problem, as this would occur at roughly the same time after booting but you should check the PC’s main fan is working and you can sometimes check the systems CPU/System temperature from the BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Just want to thank tekkies who replied - i was inspired by reading a message about dust & cat hair and opened up the unit to find the CPU fan thoroughly coated in dust - even found one of my canary's feathers! I got my marigolds on and proceeded to carefully spring clean!

After 2 days of continuous use (yes we're all exhausted) I can report that my system has not crashed at all!!

Interesting conclusion. To think of it sometimes my old cat sits on the monitor to get warm. I think she is just getting to be too old. I don't have the heart to tell her to go away. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
