Hi,

Why is it that the mountd and nfsd processes are not started automatically on my Linux server? I am able to start them manually by running the commands: rpc.montd and rpc.nfsd. My network is up and working fine. The only strange thing I see is /etc/sysconfig/network set the parameter "HOSTNAME=localhost".

Any tip would be greatly appreciated.

From the desktop, you can use Control Panel and from there, Run Level Editor. If you're using the shell, you can use setup. As for your network settings, all machines like to call themselves localhost(127.0.0.1). If you're on a local network, your machine will answer to your internal name or ip. If you are connected to the internet via ISP, you are assigned an ip and hostname(machine name)that is used mostly for identification on their subnet. The outside world knows your server(s) by the name dns has associated with your ip address. To make a long story short, the name it answers to depends on who's asking.

Hi,

For redhat you have to configure the sysv run-level scripts to get it to start automatically at given run-levels. Do as root :

/sbin/chkconfig --level 345 nfs on

The actual underlying start-up script is '/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs' if you are interested.

To see all sysv & xinetd controlled services do :

/sbin/chkconfig --list

Regards
