Why is my "Format"option greyd out???

Hey Everyone!!!!
Running Win2k Server, Veritas 8.0. I have a bunch of stuburn tapes that won't read sometimes while trying to inventory them. I only have the option of erasing and labeling media and for some apperent reason it does not let me format. Is there a setting that I'm missing??? I would appreciate any help possible.

I would like to add I'm using HP DLT 70 with DLT80GB tapes. thanks

Most tape devices don't support formatting. In those cases, using Erase will give you the same result you're looking for (blank tape).

Incidentally, if you're having problems with some tapes, you may want to talk to the tape drive vendor, since there may be some head contamination.
