Why doesWord 2002 SP2 replace UNC path with relative path after save ?

I experience a very strange behaviour when using absolute UNC pathes. After the save it converts to some relative path which makes no sense at all.
See example below:

\s01-itwal\iccsetup$\Vaj_353.EN
and after save it converts to:
../../../../../../../../../iccsetup$/Vaj_353.EN

Does anyone have an idea what's the reason ?
